First sewing project!

My daughter has been wanting to learn to sew. I have been waiting for a time when she was able to listen carefully and follow important instructions. (She has watched me sew in the past and thinks that she already knows what to do!)

This weekend, she was bored and wanted “somebody to play with.” Then, I remembered that we bought 1 1/2 yards of pink leopard print fabric a couple weekends ago that she really wanted to make a pair of shorts and top with.

I picked an easy pattern so that my daughter would have a positive “first attempt at real sewing.” I helped her pin and iron. She did all the stitching on the shorts herself and 75% of the stitching for the top herself. It took us about 3 hours to finish both pieces (hence the 25% that I finished on the top for her).

Not bad for working on the fly with my daughter, huh?

I was going for the pillowcase top design but my daughter said the ties were “itchy” so I cut the straps and sewed them onto the casing and inserted elastic where the straps were previously. Voila – same look, no ties!

Very nice job. I will never be able to thank my mom enough for taking the time to teach me to sew, it is my most treasured gift from her to me. I am sure your daughter will treasure the memory of her first real sewing project and the time you spent together on it.
